So the ground is painted exactly as it was and a flat 20% white sheet is laid over the whole stack instead: the layer list is prepended, so this sits above all nine gradients, and background-color (--bgfall) paints below every image layer, so the fall colour is covered too. Everything moves 20% toward white together, which is what "tone it down 20%" means - the tint weakens, nothing shifts hue. TWO PASSES, AND THIS IS THE SECOND. The veil went on at .20 first; 30% more off what was left (Ameer, same day: "make it thirty more percentage, whatever we have right now") makes the surviving tint 0.8 x 0.7 = 0.56 of the original, so the sheet is 1 - 0.56 = .44.
